Filofax DIY: Customized A5 Notepad

Hello! I hope you're enjoying your week :) Today I'm going to be sharing a super fun project for your planner. I've had the pleasure of owning an A5 Original Filofax for the last month or so, which is the second addition to my collection. I also use a Personal Domino, and over the last few months I've spent lots of time personalizing "My First Love." Now that I have a new (larger) baby, I'm looking for creative ways to add my own personal touch to it. I have yet to share the inside of my A5, but in the meantime you can see My Personal Domino, and how I use it.

I came across a cool "pin" while browsing pinterest for planner inspiration. It led me to this "Pretty Little Notebook" by The Hybrid Chick. But I decided to change up the supplies a bit to fit my style and make it my own. I really love the idea of personalizing a notepad. It brings me back to my teenage days when I made altered composition books to be used as journals [now it's trendy and called SMASH*ing ;)].

DIY: Customized A5 Filofax Notepad | Getting Started

Getting Started
Although I'm using the Filofax notepad that came with my A5 Original, you can easily customize this project to fit your needs.

SUPPLIES
DIY: Customized A5 Filofax Notepad | Supplies

Notepad
Washi Tape: Mix it up!
Patterned Scrapbook Paper: In complementing designs and colors.
Tag or Label
Alphabet Stickers
Scissors or Craft Knife
Dry Adhesive: I used double-sided tape.

DIRECTIONS

1. Trace the cover. [I extended the paper an inch or so to wrap over the fold and onto the back cover.]

2. Cut out your new cover. [I used a ruler and bone folder to create a nice crease.]

3. Apply a decent amount of tape onto the old cover. [If you have a tape gun, use it!] Adhere the patterned paper.

4. This is now a blank canvas for you to be creative and add your own personal touches......

5. For the first layer, I cut a 2.5" x 7" banner from complementing cardstock.

6: Start layering and adhering your papers. [I used a glue stick.]

7. Add washi tape as another layer. [The inspirational post I mentioned earlier used ribbon. You can certainly do that too.]

8. Find a good place for your tag or label. [I used a sticker label from my stash, backed it with more complementing paper, and cut it to size.] For the title, you can use alphabet stickers, or even a sentiment stamp like the inspiration post did. I have a passion for penmanship, so I hand wrote mine. But I did use some tiny alphas for a cute little saying on the bottom.

DIY: Customized A5 Filofax Notepad

There you go... You are done! Wasn't that super simple? And it turned out fabulous! What better way to add a custom and personal piece to your planner...

Project Life: Week 43

Hello lovelies! It's Project Life Tuesday, which means I'll be sharing last week's completed layout with you today. And I have to say that it feels really great to be up-to-date in this year's album! Having been consistently "current" for the last month is pretty darn awesome :)

Wondering how I do it?
I keep a notebook with all our daily details, take photos often, and allow myself enough time each week to work in my album. It makes the whole Project Life process so much easier. If you ever fall behind and have a good chunk of time to play catch-up, all you have to do is refer to your notebook and photos. It won't be so overwhelming that you put it off until next year... or just give up all together.

With this being my first year ever documenting with PL [starting from January 2013], I made it my mission to follow through. I'm not a scrapbooker... it just never appealed to me. But a system like Project Life, tailored and personalized to suit my style, is the perfect way to document our family's memories forever. I love it! I can't wait to see it completed at the end of the year :D

But first...

WEEK 43
Life Documented
October 20 - October 26

Week 43: Full Spread

It was a busy and productive, but very fun week here at our house :) I captured lots of great everyday life photos, along with throwbacks and days full of creative craftiness. I really let the photos themselves be the inspiration for this week's theme. Neon. Love. I played around with some colorful journal and filler cards, washi tape, Cameo cuts, and alphabet stickers. I also used black and white as accent colors.

Week 43: Left Page

Here I'm using a Becky Higgins Design A pocket page continued from Week 42. I filled it with some free printables and lots of handmade cards, starting with the title card. Inspired by the pops of neon, I thought it would be fun to use some bright and colorful Cameo cuts on a black card. I adore my white gel pen and metallic markers, and find any chance to use them! I made a "stitched" frame, hand wrote the numbers, and doodled in the arrow.

Week 43: "Scary Movie Marathon"

There's nothing better than spending the month of October watching DVDs from our collection. This is the start of our Scary Movie Marathon. I created this card using the reverse side of a We R Memory Keepers journal card from last week. The heart background most definitely represents our love for the Horror movie genre. I added some neon blue paper tape, narrow gray washi, filmstrip tape, a Cosmo Cricket sticker label, and Glitz alphabet stickers.

Week 43: 3x4 Pockets
For the first set of 3x4 pockets I used some fun free printables from my collection. They couldn't be more perfect for my theme! [I featured the Neon Cards on my blog in this post, and you can find the Calendar Cards in this one.]

Week 43: 3x4 Pockets

The next 3x4 pocket is a handmade card using the reverse side of a MAMBI filler card from last week. I added a wallet-size photo of My Very First Giveaway currently running on Instagram [ends on 10/31/13]. I layered some hot pink Up&Up (Target) washi with bright green Elmer's tape to complete the card. Following that is a pocket with a lovely quote from my printables stash.

Week 43: "Toy Story Mania"

This is a handmade card using gorgeous 6x6 Ki Memories paper cut down to size. On top, I used a strip of grayish-black narrow washi [by The Paper Studio from Hobby Lobby]. I chose a couple of everyday life IG photos of my daughter and her Toy Story BFFs. I added some American Crafts alphabet stickers, and Cosmo Cricket sentiment stickers to finish it.

Week 43: "Crafty"

Here is a card I made using pretty pink chevron paper from Amy Tangerine's Sketchbook pad. I added some wallet-size instapics of this week's crafty project. A hot pink yarn wig to go with my daughter's Strawberry Shortcake Halloween costume. [Stay tuned this week for my DIY!] I used some Paper Addict washi tape and fun alphabet stickers to complete this card.

Week 43: Right Page

For this side I'm using a set of Hobby Lobby's pocket pages. [I hit a great sale and got them for 50% off! I also picked up a set like B.H.'s Design A.] I really love the way this layout looks with the other page. Again, I mixed up cards, papers, collections, and elements to fill the pockets.

Week 43: Close Up

In this set of cards I have a 4x6 WRMK journal card which I made my Week in Review card. I used my favorite white gel pen to write the details. Both the 4x3 quote card and green chevron card are by MAMBI. I added yellow dotted paper tape, narrow black washi, AC alphabet stickers, and a Dymo label titled #TBT. I wrote "throwback" directly on the black tape using my white gel pen. The "THU" element came from a set from this month's batch of free printables. You can find it here.

Week 43: "Create"

This week I got to play around in a couple of my books. I added a personal and creative touch to a notepad in my A5 Filofax [check back tomorrow for the DIY], and relaxed with some zentangle doodles in my sketchbook. I made a collage of my photos using my Samsung GS3 smartphone and an app called Photo Grid for Android. The 4x4 photo looks perfect on this handmade card from pink patterned Ki Memories paper. I found a TPC Studio glitter sticker label, and layered it with some black cardstock. I used my white pen again for the dots, and some Pebbles, Inc. alphabet stickers for the title.

Week 43: "Yummy"

This 4x6 card was made with polka dot paper from Dear Lizzy's 5th & Frolic collection. I added a 4x4 instagram photo which I edited with a new fun app called Photofy for Android. I used some striped narrow washi, green paper tape, neon dot stickers [made with a hole punch and thick paper tape], and colorful American Crafts alphabet stickers to complete the card.

Week 43: Close Up

For this last group of cards I have a chalkboard filler card which I featured in Printables: September. Underneath it, I used a neon doodle filler card from my collection. I added a wallet-size instagram photo capturing me working in my Filofaxes, and some pink Cosmo Cricket alphabet stickers. I created the final handmade card with more paper from Dear Lizzy's 5th & Frolic. I stacked the small instapics [another Photofy image] and embellished the card with a speech bubble and printable label cut on my Cameo, and a pink washi tape banner.

That's all I have for you today! I hope you liked my Project Life layout :) You can see all of the pages in my 2013 album here. I'll be linking up with The Mom Creative, so be sure to stop by for more PL inspiration! Looking for the fun free printables I used in this week's spread? Printables: October

Happy Monday! With October coming close to an end, I thought it's about that time again for my monthly Printables post! In case you missed September's batch, you can find it here. I originally started using free printables over a year ago for my SMASH* books. Over time, I've incorporated them into all of my books. My Project Life album, handmade Daybooks, even my Filofax organizers.

If the whole "Printables" thing is new to you, or it's something you've been meaning to look into, I strongly urge you to read this post. You'll find lots of helpful tips and tricks for at-home printing, including ways to save time and money doing it...

Every month I'm on the lookout for new free printables to add to my collection. In October, it's journal & filler cards, along with fun elements I can use in my books. Since I only print once a month, I need my stuff to go the extra mile... the versatility of the printables I use helps with that.

Now onto the goodies....

CUSTOMIZED NOTECARDS
Printables: OCT | Editable Notecards

Hello Notecards by Benign Objects
Striped Notecards by Jenny Bevlin

These cards could be used for anything. Journal cards for Project Life or notecards for penpal letters. I'll be using these as paper for my A5 Filofax planner. [Just punch holes!] Hence the, "I'm a Filofax Addict." It'll be a fun place for important notes, favorite quotes, a checklist. Anything.

I'm always restocking my supply of Project Life cards. I love the fun and colorful designs and styles available! A lot of the stuff I found this month had little elements as part of the collection. They're so versatile... try using 'em in different books! The Watercolor set has circle tags & labels, and prompt cards for journaling. The What About Me collection has cards, washi, flair, banners, and label sentiments. I even found some Pinterest cards!

None of my books or projects would be complete without quote cards and typography. Each with their own special message. I print them as 4x6 or 3x4 [shown here] and tuck them into Project Life pockets, add them to my Filofaxes for inspiration, or as an element on a SMASH* spread. Be creative! [Tip: I used a small corner punch on these cards.]

VINTAGE GLAM STUDIO
Printables: OCT | Designer - Vintage Glam Studio

The Blues Journaling Elements

Vintage Office Supply Journaling Elements

Each month I like to feature a new favorite designer. I recently came across Vintage Glam Studio... and fell in love. The style of VGS is sweet and whimsical. Shown here are just a few of the designs, but there are still about a dozen more left to print! Each of these sets come with 4 fun journal cards and a various mix of elements. From banners and washi tape to flair, flags, and labels. The cards are great for PL, and the little elements would be perfect for planners or SMASHing. I know how I'll be using mine! I highly recommend browsing Vintage Glam's blog. There are so many wonderful things to be discovered!

Printables: OCTOBER

I hope you enjoyed this month's printables post and found some new goodies along the way! Be sure to check back next month to see November's finds! Filofax: Week 43

Hello :) I hope you had a great weekend! It's Sunday, which means it time for my end of the week Filofax post. For the last month or so I've had the pleasure of owning an A5 Original, and have been using it along with my Personal Domino to help organize my life. For those who've asked me how I use my Filofaxes together, I've been working on an A5 post. And very soon, I'll be sharing the inside of my Original and how I use it. So stay tuned! In the meantime, you can see my [Personal] Domino post here, or Week 42.

Filofax: Week 43 in My A5 Original & Personal Domino

For a better understanding of the details you see on the pages of my Filofaxes, I'm just going to give you a quick rundown of what I use my Personal and A5 planner for. Both follow the same color-coding system. My [personal] Domino holds all of my personal notes, family details, appointments/events, paydays & bills, contacts, as well as notes specific to my A5. For my blog and Project Life planning, crafts, online order tracking, and Household stuff [such as chore lists, menu planning, and important financial details], I use my A5. Since my personal FF is my everyday planner, I duplicate entries from my A5 into it because I like knowing exactly what I have going on in that part of my life. So far, this system totally works for me.

Filofax: Week 43 in My Personal Domino

This week in my personal Filofax was pretty simple... not busy at all. Apart from launching my very first Giveaway on Monday, and some free Amazon goodies [courtesy of Swagbucks] that came in the mail, it was a very mellow time in this part of my life.

Since we're getting close to Halloween, I decided to decorate my pages with that in mind. [I'm not too big on the holiday, but I don't mind it. My daughter loves it, so I try to make it fun for her.] I don't have many Halloween themed items, so I went with a Black & White color scheme with pops of orange. I created the polka dot banner on top using strips of K&Co. SMASH* brand washi tape. I used some B&W damask print washi [gifted to me] on the bottom of my pages.

I found a set of adorable Halloween Hello Kitty stickers in my stash that I picked up last year. They're the perfect addition to this spread!  I also used a Hawaiian kawaii page marker [gifted to me] for a small note, and a yellow up&up [Target] magnetic clip holds my papers together.

The WO2P inserts I'm using are by my girl Cathy V. of Paper Addict. You can download them here. I love 'em because they provide more than enough space to write everything (including weekends), and that they start on Sunday.

Filofax: Week 43 in My A5 Original

In my A5 I'm using No. 2015-2013 WO1P inserts by Paige Paigen. I'm still getting used to having only one page for all of my notes. But as you can see from how busy this week was in this part of my life, I didn't have a problem with space. So far I like them :)

The pages in this planner don't get decorated too much besides some sticky flags and the usual washi tape. This week's tape is continued from last week. Yellow striped washi by up&up, and pink geometric Studio 112 tape. A Paper Addict dashboard always sits between the pages of my current weeks, and it's the perfect place to hold sticky notes.

Green Clean: DIY Stain Remover

Happy Aloha Friday! I hope you enjoyed your week :) It's been pretty busy in our household with the holidays right around the corner, as well as all of the planning I've been doing for my blog. I have lots of fun stuff coming up, so stay tuned! I noticed that it's been a very long time since I've done a "Green" post... and based on the statistics of my blog, they are some of my most popular articles to date!

Today I have another homemade favorite from my "Green Clean" arsenal. It's about time to restock my Stain Remover supply, making this the perfect opportunity to share my recipe. Originally inspired by photos from Pinterest, I decided to try it out for myself. I've been using this for over a year now and it still surprises me with the things it can get out... having a 4 year old, and all ;) With about 95% of my household cleaners being homemade and natural, I have no plans on ever switching back to store-bought chemical products. This one does the job, is very inexpensive to make, and consists of ingredients I know. We love being Green.

SUPPLIES

1 Part Dawn
2 Parts Hydrogen Peroxide
Spray Bottle
Note: I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut a vinyl label.

First add the Dawn dish detergent. [Note: The other recipes I came across used the blue Dawn. Since I don't notice a difference between the type of Dawn being used, I went with my favorite... plus it was what I had on hand! The Hawaiian scent is heavenly...]

Over time, instead of measuring, I just eyeball the ingredients. Homemade recipes are so great because making adjustments is super simple. My bottle has measurements on the side which is very handy.

Next you add the peroxide. Again, I just eyeballed it, pouring about double the amount I used for Dawn.

I slowly added more Dawn and more peroxide to get a good amount of solution. This small batch will hold me over for about 6 months. Adding large amounts of each ingredient will give you a full bottle!

You are done! Wasn't that easy? Just give the bottle a good mix before each use, but don't shake it too vigorously or you'll end up with a soapy mess. Spray on carpets, upholstery, and clothing to remove tough stains.

*TIP: Perform a spot test on your item first, as the peroxide may cause lightening.

Don't forget to check out my other "Green Clean" DIY's that I linked at the top of this post! If you're looking for more natural homemade recipes, browse my "Earth Mama" pinboard on Pinterest! You'll find lots of inspiration for making that small step to becoming a Green household.

You can stay updated on my recent posts, projects, and photos by following me on instagram, or by "liking" my new fan page on Facebook. So why not head over there now and show some love...

Are you Green family? Do you make your own cleaners too? What motivated you? Tried this recipe? I'd love to hear about it! Any thoughts, question, or comments about this post? Please drop me a line. Your feedback is always welcome and much appreciated!

Project Life: Week 42

Hello! It's Project Life Tuesday, which means I'll be sharing last week's completed layout. And I have to say that it feels amazing to be current and up-to-date in this year's album! The day or two that I designate each week to PL is incredibly therapeutic. I'm just doing what I love to do...and I don't have rush.

How do I stay so on top of Project Life, you ask? I take lots of photos! And not necessarily every single day... although I am known to be in 1-2 photo-a-day challenges each month :) Also, I don't just photograph special occasions... I capture everyday life moments, too! Those snapshots always turn out to be the best ones. The most important thing I do is keep a journal or notebook.... and document everything! What you did that day, what the weather was like, what you watched on TV, family time, life. You wouldn't believe what they make journal cards about. There's one for everything! This week you'll see lots of ways I fill the empty pockets in my album...

Doing those things, and allowing myself enough time to plan-out and work on my pages each week, makes for a very easy process. Even if I do happen to fall behind, and it's been known to happen, catching up isn't a problem. You just need to give yourself enough time and have the motivation to do it!

WEEK 42
Life Documented
October 13 - October 19

Week 42: Full Spread

I'm incredibly happy that the last few weeks has allowed me to do double-page spreads! I love having the extra space to create :) It was a very busy week but I had tons of fun using different types of journal and filler cards to document all of the details. From The Walking Dead and Filofax love, to Happy Mail and family outings!

Week 42: Left Page

I'm using a Becky Higgins Design A pocket page continued from Week 41. I filled it smartphone snippets, fun free printables, even handmade cards.... with my Title Card being the first. I love the solid-side of this double-sided patterned paper by Ki Memories. Pretty pink. I thought it would be fabulous to do a black-and-white theme on it, since I have touches of both color throughout my layout. I added a white doily to the center of the card, a cute house I cut with my Silhouette Cameo on top of it, and some gorgeous Amy Tangerine thickers for the title. I found a small manila mailing tag and sprayed it with my homemade alcohol ink. I layered it with some chevron washi tape, a piece of printable flair, and pink number thickers. I doodled a dotted frame around the card and "stitching" to the house.

Week 42: The Walking Dead Card

Next is my handmade Walking Dead card using some pretty patterned Ki Memories paper. The color red is very fitting for this show, and also says "Season Premiere" wonderfully. It holds two wallet-size instagram photos from our awesome night of viewing. I added blue paper tape for contrast, and layered it with filmstrip washi, and black alphabet stickers.

Week 42: 3x4 Pockets

For the first card in this set of 3x4 pockets, I used a screenshot taken on my Galaxy S3 using the Fling Weather app on Android. Hello Sunshine! It's a simple way to fill those pockets, and also adds that special personalized touch that I love having in my books. Next, I used the perfect card for a selfie. You can download it from this post.

Week 42: 3x4 Pockets

This next set of 3x4 pockets holds a printable calendar card from my collection. You can find it in this post. I used an Ali Edwards stamp to highlight the current week. Following is a "FUN" and simple handmade card using paper from my scraps. It holds an adorable instagram photo which I edited using the sleek new [paid] app Photofy on Android.

Week 42: "Filofax Addict" Card

This 6x4 card uses the backside of last week's MAMBI card as the background. The grid design made placing the various elements very easy. I used 2 wallet-size instapics taken from this month's Filofax Photo-a-day challenge [#fflovephotoaday], some fun washi tape, and a couple of Dymo labels.

Week 42: WRMK Journal Card as Week in Review Card

Since I decided not to journal on any of my cards this time around, I went with a "Week in Review" card instead. This black and gray We R Memory Keepers card couldn't be more perfect. With a doodle design and lines for easy journaling that makes it even better! I used some American Crafts alphabet stickers for the title, and a white gel pen for the details.

Week 42: Right Page

I continued the same layout on this pocket page. But instead of Design A, this one's by The Paper Studio, from Hobby Lobby, that I picked up for 50% off this weekend! I filled it with lots of fun filler cards :)

Week 42: Close Up of 6x4 Pockets

The first pocket holds a new WRMK quote card. The next one is my Happy Mail card with lovely paper from Dear Lizzy's Lucky Charm collection. I added instagram photos of the RAKs and packages I received this week, and finished off the card with a handwritten banner.

Week 42: 3x4 Pockets

For the first set of 3x4 pockets on this page, I used another screenshot taken on my GS3. This time I captured my Instagram profile showing my followers. I reached 700 this week! [As promised to my loyal followers, I decided to run my very first giveaway! It launched yesterday over on IG,  but you can find complete details here on my blog.] My next card was made using a B&W polka dot MAMBI card and another wallet-size insta pic edited with Photofy. I added a printable ticket from my stash, and a Cosmo Cricket sticker.

Week 42: 3x4 Pockets

The last of the 3x4 pockets holds a printable quote card from my collection, and another handmade MAMBI card. This red one is a nice pop of a color against the B&W instagram photo. I layered neon paper tape with chevron washi, and added a small Dymo label.

Week 42: Handmade Card

I created this handmade card using 6x6 Ki Memories paper cut down to size. It holds a 4x4 selfie from instagram. I used more neon paper tape to create an arrow banner, doodled a stitching detail, and hand wrote some faux calligraphy. Some Amy Tangerine foam thickers, and a camera cutout finish it off.

Week 42: Out & About Card

The last handmade card started out as a free printable from my collection. I really like the banner and the colors work wonderfully with the rest of the layout. Who says you have to journal on journal cards? I love to add photos to mine! But I did write more faux calligraphy on it....

That's all I have for you today! I hope you enjoyed my Project Life post :) If you would like to see more pages from my 2013 album, you can find it here. I'll be linking up with The Mom Creative, so be sure to stop by for more PL inspiration! Looking for the free printables I used in this week's spread?
